Sarah Hillary
Working with Sarah, I was fascinated to learn about the chemical processes that can take place within the pigments of old oil paintings. For example, some of the oils in paints can, in certain conditions, turn into soaps, which can then migrate to the surface of the painting, producing a cloudy effect. Sarah conducted tests on some painting surfaces to determine the nature of varnishes which appear to be darkening. She also used specialized torches to examine the surfaces of paintings, revealing historical treatments and repairs not visible in normal lighting conditions.
