Lilburn awards – 2020 recipient updates: Mat Hoyes and Michael Vinten
15 February 2022
Providing New Zealand music resources to students and performers is the focus of two inaugural Lilburn Research Awards, granted to Mathew Hoyes and Michael Vinten.
The Lilburn Research Awards are a new joint initiative of the Alexander Turnbull Library and the Lilburn Trust, who were delighted to be able to support both these projects.
The Alexander Turnbull Library’s Music Curator, Dr Michael Brown, says that the Lilburn Research Award is an occasional award that has been introduced – alongside the biennial Lilburn Research Fellowship – to support other kinds of research projects.
“Mathew’s and Michael’s projects are both about connecting new generations and different communities with New Zealand’s musical heritage. It is exciting to see the resources of the Archive of New Zealand Music and other Turnbull collections being used to educate students and inspire new performances,” Dr Brown says.
Mat Hoyes’ music analyses of a selection of NZ songs have now been added to the AudioCulture website. Counting the Beat: Analysing Aotearoa Pop Songs - Article | AudioCulture
Michael Vinten, has completed vol.1 (of three) of his NZ art song series, which is available through SOUNZ: Centre for New Zealand Music, Toi te Arapūoru here. The other two concerts have been recorded and the published volumes will be out soon.
These awards enable a deeper understanding of the musical resources held within the Alexander Turnbull Library. Congratulations to both recipients.
The Lilburn Trust funds the biennial Lilburn Research Fellowship, the Lilburn Trust Student Composition and Performance Awards, and provides funding towards New Zealand music projects. Applications will soon be open for the Lilburn Research Fellowship 2023. New grant applications will be considered in June 2022. Further details available through the grants tab on the Lilburn Trust website.
