Forever Remembered

12 December 2021

The Paintings in Perpetuity programme provided an opportunity for a whanau in the Far North to create a memorial to a deceased relative. Charles Blomfield’s paintings of the Pink and White Terraces are well-known to many New Zealanders. The artist produced dozens of these paintings for sale. The Price family are descended from Sophia Gray who guided tourists to the landmark prior to the Terraces’ destruction in 1886. Miss Cynthia Price, who died in 1989, was a direct descendent of Sophia. Some of her relatives chose this picture of the White Terraces and clubbed together to make a donation for its conservation. Dedicating the repair of this artwork to Cynthia Price means that her name will forever be associated with this particular painting as part of the permanent catalogue record.

Paintings in Perpetuity is an initiative from the Turnbull Endowment Trust.
