On Friday 28th June Dr Damon Salesa delivered the Turnbull Founder Lecture 2019 at the National Library auditorium in Wellington. The lecture was titled: ‘Into Native Seas, Europeans Encounter an Indigenous Ocean’. Dr Salesa is Pro Vice Chancellor, Pacific, at Auckland University and a former National Library Fellow.
The Founder Lecture is an annual event organised by the Friends of the Turnbull Library (FoTL), and is held on or close to the date of Alexander Turnbull’s founding bequest. June 28th 2019 marked 101 years since Alexander Turnbull’s death. This year is also particularly significant for FoTL as it marks the 80th anniversary of the group’s establishment.
