On Friday, esteemed composer Dame Gillian Whitehead will deliver the Lilburn Lecture 2019 in the National Library auditorium in Wellington. The title of the lecture is Breath of the Birds: the Revival of Taonga Puoro. Dame Gillian will consider these traditional Maori instruments and how they have influenced her compositions. The lecture will include a live performance by NZSO principle flautist Bridget Douglas and taonga puoro exponent Alistair Fraser.
The Lilburn Lecture is an annual event to celebrate the birthday of Douglas Lilburn. It is funded by the Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust (ATLET) through the Lilburn Trust. This is the final event for the year to celebrate ATLET’s 85th anniversary.
